We often use the following phrases. Let’s try and say these in Japanese!

今日は何曜日ですか。
Kyō wa nan’yōbi desu ka?
What day is it today?


今日は何曜だっけ?(Casual)
Kyō wa naniyō da kke?
What day is it today?

「何曜(なんよう)」is the shortened version of「何曜日(なんようび)」.
「何曜日」means “what day is it?”


何曜日にご飯に行きますか。
Naniyōbi ni gohan ni ikimasu ka?
What day of the week shall we go out for a meal?


日本語のレッスンは何曜日に受けられますか。
Nihongo no ressun wa naniyōbi ni ukeraremasu ka?

Sunday =「日曜日(にちようび)」Nichiyōbi

次の日は朝から仕事なので、日曜日は早めに寝ます。
Tsugi no hi wa asa kara shigoto nanode, nichiyōbi wa hayame ni nemasu.
I’ll go to bed early on Sunday, because I have to go to work early next morning.

「日」means “sun” or “day.” One of the kun-yomi readings is「ひ(hi)」.

Simplification of Days of the Week

Sometimes the seven「曜日(ようび)」are written in a simplified way, for example like「日(にち)」,「月(げつ)」,「火(か)」,「水(すい)」,「木(もく)」,「金(きん)」and「土(ど)」.

We often see the simplified versions used in a calendar.
